Rio Tinto announces start of iron ore rail cars production with Gemco

Rio Tinto begins production of iron ore rail cars in Western Australia, investing A$150m for 100 new cars in Pilbara, creating up to 25 jobs. Collaboration with Gemco Rail and CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Stock, supported by WA government for local supply chain. First 40 cars made in Forrestfield, Perth, with plans for 60 more in Karratha.
Gemco Rail receives A$6.9m LMIF grant for upgrades and Karratha facility. LMIF invests over $13.5m in local manufacturing projects, including modernizing equipment at Forrestfield. Rio Tinto, Gemco, and CRRC praised by WA Premier for supporting local industry and jobs. Rail cars to transport up to 118 tonnes of iron ore from mines to ports.
Karratha workshop to supply new and refurbished rail car bearings locally, reducing need for transport from Perth. Locally manufactured rail cars to be in service in Pilbara by first half of 2025. Rio Tinto CEO Simon Trott highlights sustainable supply chain and economic support for years to come. Company operates 13,500 iron ore rail cars, replacing ten each year.
Hitachi Rail commissioned autonomous transport system for Gudai-Darri mine, connecting to Rio Tinto’s AutoHaul network via 166km rail spur. Rio Tinto aims for reliable and sustainable supply chain with new manufacturing capability in Pilbara. Partnership with Gemco and CRRC to support operations and regional economy.
