Rio Tinto Group is in talks with the Democratic Republic of Congo to develop a large lithium deposit at Roche Dure, aiming to counterbalance Chinese dominance in the mining industry. The deposit holds 400 million tonnes of resources, and the DRC is also exploring a minerals-for-security deal with the US. Rio Tinto is expanding its presence in battery metals, with a recent acquisition and developments in Serbia and Argentina. KoBold Metals, backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, plans to be involved once legal disputes are resolved, potentially collaborating with Rio Tinto on the project.
