Stocks fall sharply on tariff war fears, S&P 500 close to bear market

From Nasdaq: 2025-04-09 09:21:00

Wall Street closed sharply lower on Tuesday due to concerns over the tariff war, with all three major indexes ending in the red. The Dow Jones fell 0.8%, Nasdaq dropped 2.2%, and the S&P 500 lost 1.6%. The fear-gauge VIX rose 11.4%, and the S&P 500 is close to entering a bear market.

The S&P 500 saw a 4% rise earlier on hope of a tariff deadline extension, but White House confirmation of tariffs caused a downturn. Shares of Intel and Apple plunged 7.4% and 5%. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly mentioned no rush for rate cuts, citing robust economy and labor market.
