Target CEO Brian Cornell meets with Al Sharpton after DEI rollback

From CNBC: 2025-04-17 16:59:00

Target CEO Brian Cornell met with Rev. Al Sharpton in response to calls for a boycott over the retailer’s rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Sharpton may call for a boycott if Target doesn’t commit to supporting the Black community and Black-owned businesses. Foot traffic at Target stores has declined for 10 straight weeks since the rollback was announced in January.

Sharpton met with Target and PepsiCo leaders to discuss DEI efforts. Conservative activists like Robby Starbuck have pressured companies to drop DEI initiatives, leading to Target’s decision to scale back. Other companies like Walmart and McDonald’s have also scrapped some DEI programs. Costco shareholders rejected a proposal to review diversity programs, leading to “buy-cotts” organized by NAN.

Target’s challenges extend beyond the DEI backlash, as store traffic declined while Costco saw an increase. Target’s struggle to grow sales and pressure on margins from increased grocery sales have contributed to its stagnant revenue over the past four years. Despite meetings with Sharpton and PepsiCo, Target faces ongoing scrutiny over its DEI decisions. Target has faced a series of challenges, including inventory issues, theft, damaged goods, backlash over Pride Month collection, and higher costs from rushed shipments.

Rev. Al Sharpton questions Target’s commitment to social justice following George Floyd’s murder, asking CEO Brian Cornell what changed since the company pledged support. Cornell was moved by Floyd’s death, vowing to fight racial inequities and be a role model for change.
