Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized China’s retaliatory measures in response to U.S. tariffs, calling it a “big mistake.” President Donald Trump announced new tariffs, bringing the total to 104% on Chinese goods. Bessent stated the tariffs aim to bring trading partners to the negotiating table and create jobs in the U.S. Taiwan and Vietnam plan to work towards “zero tariffs” on U.S. imports. In contrast, the Chinese Commerce Department accused the U.S. of blackmail and vowed to fight back. Around 70 countries have contacted the White House for negotiations on reciprocal tariffs.
