UK public sector net borrowing was higher than expected in March at £16.44 billion, up from £12.31 billion in February and exceeding a consensus of £16.05 billion. February’s net borrowing was revised up to £10.71 billion. This was the third-highest March borrowing since records began in 1993.
Borrowing for the year ended March 31 is estimated at £151.9 billion, higher than the forecast of £137.3 billion and £20.7 billion more than the previous year. The current budget deficit was estimated at £74.6 billion, up £12.6 billion from the previous year.
