United Airlines plans to cut flights this summer due to weak domestic travel demand, while international bookings remain strong. The carrier will reduce domestic capacity by 4% in the third quarter. In the first quarter, United reported a profit of $387 million, with adjusted earnings of 91 cents per share, beating Wall Street estimates.
Unit revenue for domestic flights dropped 3.9%, while international route sales increased by over 5%. Revenue for the quarter was $13.21 billion, slightly below analyst expectations. United’s performance exceeded estimates with earnings per share at 91 cents, compared to the expected 76 cents.
Airlines like United and Delta are benefiting from travelers willing to pay more for premium seats despite economic concerns. Delta recently expressed uncertainty over its full-year outlook. United maintained its adjusted earnings forecast of $11.50 to $13.50 per share for the year, but projected earnings of $7 to $9 per share in case of a recession.
