The top U.S. watchdog for consumer finance has asked to withdraw from the 2022 case against MoneyGram, leaving New York as the sole plaintiff. The case accuses MoneyGram of violating a federal rule to make money transfers easier. Legal challenges to the CFPB’s funding structure have caused delays, but the Supreme Court rejected them last year.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has dismissed nine enforcement cases and federal judges have paused seven more. Cases involving Experian and Comerica Bank are ongoing. The CFPB’s move to withdraw from the MoneyGram case comes amid efforts to dismantle the agency under the Trump administration. New York officials are still suing MoneyGram.
