Xiaomi delivers record cars in March as winners emerge in China EV race

Chinese electric carmakers Xiaomi, Xpeng, and Leapmotor each delivered nearly 30,000 or more cars in March, surpassing several startup competitors. Xiaomi set a record with over 29,000 EVs delivered, while Xpeng delivered 33,205 vehicles, a 268% surge from last year. Leapmotor delivered 37,095 vehicles, a 154% increase.

Xiaomi’s SU7 model was involved in a fatal crash on autopilot mode. The company aims to deliver 350,000 vehicles in 2025. Xpeng delivered over 30,000 units for the fifth consecutive month, while Leapmotor launched two EV models in the U.K. Li Auto delivered 36,674 vehicles in March.

BYD sold 371,419 passenger vehicles with overseas sales reaching a record high. They unveiled the “Super e-Platform” technology offering 400km of range in five minutes of charging. Tesla saw an 11.5% decrease in China sales, while Nio delivered 15,039 vehicles and Zeekr delivered 15,422 vehicles in March.

BYD led in quarterly sales with 986,098 vehicles sold, surpassing Tesla in battery electric vehicle sales. Xpeng reported 94,008 vehicles delivered in Q1, a 331% YoY growth. Leapmotor’s quarterly deliveries doubled to 87,552 units. Nio and Li Auto reported weaker growth compared to their competitors.
