Akero Therapeutics presented new data from the Phase 2b SYMMETRY trial at the EASL Congress 2025, showcasing the potential of efruxifermin (EFX) to reverse fibrosis in patients with cirrhosis due to MASH. The trial demonstrated EFX’s ability to improve fibrosis without worsening MASH in patients with compensated cirrhosis. The lead investigator highlighted the significant impact of EFX’s anti-fibrotic effects on treating liver disease, noting a 50% mortality rate within five years for MASH cirrhosis patients without a transplant. EFX’s treatment effect increased over time, with sustained responses observed up to Week 96.

The SYMMETRY study involved 182 patients with biopsy-confirmed compensated cirrhosis due to MASH, receiving weekly doses of EFX or placebo for 96 weeks. EFX is now being evaluated in Phase 3 trials targeting all stages of MASH. Akero’s lead candidate, EFX, is an FGF21 analog showing promise in improving liver histology, metabolic parameters, and cardiovascular risk markers. Despite a decline in AKRO’s stock price on Friday, it showed a slight increase in after-hours trading on the NASDAQ Global Select Market.
