Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported a strong fiscal first-quarter earnings that beat expectations, with revenue of $7.44 billion versus $7.13 billion expected. Despite AI chip export controls, shares initially rose 4% in extended trading. CEO Lisa Su stated that AMD expects $700 million in lost revenue due to export controls in the current quarter, with total losses reaching $1.5 billion by year end.
AMD’s net income was $709 million, or 44 cents per diluted share, a significant increase from the year-earlier period. The company is the second-place server CPU vendor, with its Epyc processors gaining market share. In the data center segment, sales were up 57% annually with demand for Epyc processors and Instinct GPUs driving growth.
AMD’s Client and Gaming segment, which includes chips for consumer devices, rose 28% annually to $2.9 billion. Laptop and PC chip sales surged 68% year over year, while gaming sales declined 30% due to lower console chip revenue. The embedded segment saw a 3% decline to $823 million, mainly from the Xilinx acquisition in 2022.
