Global smartphone shipments are expected to grow 0.6% year over year to 1.24 billion in 2025, with a five-year CAGR of 1.4%, according to IDC. This forecast was lowered from 2.3% due to uncertainty and economic challenges affecting consumer spending. The U.S. and China are driving growth, while Apple is expected to decline 1.9% due to competition and economic factors.
China is forecast to grow by 3% Y/Y driven by government subsidies, while the U.S. market is expected to grow 1.9% in 2025, down from 3.3% in 2017, due to uncertainty and tariff-related price increases. India and Vietnam are seen as key alternatives to China for smartphone production, but additional tariffs could pose risks.
Despite challenges, Apple is expected to see a boost in demand from heavy discounts during the 618 shopping festival and the launch of the iPhone 17 with significant hardware upgrades. The U.S. market faces uncertainty due to potential tariff hikes on smartphones, complicating long-term planning for OEMs. India and Vietnam may be key production alternatives to China.
