Automakers see strong April sales increases amid tariff fear-buying

Automakers like Ford, Hyundai, and Kia saw significant year-over-year U.S. sales increases in April as consumers rushed to buy new vehicles ahead of potential price hikes due to tariffs. Demand slowed as vehicle inventories tightened and prices increased, leading to lower sales in future weeks.
Ford reported a 16% increase in April sales, Hyundai saw a 19% increase, and Kia’s sales increased roughly 14% compared to a year earlier. General Motors reported a 20% increase, while Toyota’s sales increased by 10%. Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported vehicles took effect April 3, with additional levies on auto parts expected soon.
Ford CEO Jim Farley stated that while recent tariff changes are helpful, more actions are needed to assist automakers and grow the U.S. auto industry. This comes as automakers adjust to the changing market conditions under the new tariffs.
