Mortgage rates in the U.S. rose this week, with the average rate on a 30-year mortgage hitting 6.86%, the highest since mid-February. Additionally, rates on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages increased to 6.01% from 5.92% last week. Factors influencing rates include global demand for U.S. Treasurys and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy decisions. The elevated rates, which can cost borrowers hundreds more each month, have dampened home shopper enthusiasm, leading to a slow start to the spring homebuying season despite increased inventory. Sales of previously owned U.S. homes in April were the slowest since 2009.
