Major corporations currently dominate decentralized AI (DeAI) companies, hindering decentralization. The UN report in April revealed that the AI market, valued at $4.8 trillion, is controlled by just 100 companies, mostly from the US and China. Centralized AI poses ethical concerns, with examples like Microsoft’s Copilot creating inappropriate content.

Centralized AI has faced issues, such as Microsoft’s Copilot generating inappropriate images and Citadel being involved in an AI trading scandal. Google’s Project Maven, used in military tech, raised ethical questions, leading employees to request its cancellation. These incidents highlight the drawbacks of centralized AI, including ethical lapses and monopolistic control.

Corporations and nation-states currently hold more power in AI development compared to DeAI projects. Russian President Putin emphasized the importance of AI in global dominance, while China aims to lead in AI by 2030. DeAI faces challenges in competing with well-resourced incumbents, but could gain market share over time through open-source models and transparent documentation.

DeAI offers advantages like improved privacy and data control, no single point of failure, and democratized access. Despite these benefits, centralized AI is likely to dominate the AI landscape. To promote decentralization, a clear DeAI strategy with common standards across projects must be implemented without compromise.
