Chainalysis CEO offers a clue into the recent spate of Paris crypto attacks

Criminals unaware that crypto is traceable are behind recent kidnappings, says Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin. Law enforcement has successfully traced stolen funds, resulting in arrests. Two serious crypto-related attacks occurred in Paris, prompting France’s interior minister to address rising security concerns. Levin hopes arrests send a message that crypto robbery is not profitable.
Despite law enforcement success, Levin says offline robberies targeting the crypto industry are still a concern. This year, there have been 22 recorded incidents of in-person crypto-related theft, compared to 28 in 2024. A University of Cambridge study found that these “wrench attacks” are often underreported due to revictimization fears.
