Comcast SpinCo chooses corporate name Versant

From CNBC: 2025-05-06 15:09:00

Comcast has chosen the name Versant for the spinoff of its NBCUniversal cable network portfolio. Versant will include networks like USA, CNBC, MSNBC, and digital assets like Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes. The new name is not consumer-facing and emphasizes versatility. The spinoff is expected to be complete by the end of 2025.

Versant will focus on individual brands, not the corporate name, for business-to-business purposes. The company generated about $7 billion in revenue last year. Versant aims to build a growth narrative for investors, potentially making acquisitions beyond media plays. The company will not launch its streaming service but rely on brands for digital strategies.

Versant may acquire personal finance or fintech platforms for CNBC and podcasts catering to Democrats for MSNBC. The company aims to return money to shareholders via a dividend. Versant is unlikely to acquire a group of cable networks or TV station groups due to debt and regulatory concerns. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr raised concerns about national news media companies exercising control over local TV stations.
