Nissan announced on May 13 plans to lay off another 11,000 employees and close more than half a dozen plants globally, adding to the carmaker’s total workforce reduction of roughly 20,000 jobs, accounting for 15% of its workforce.

Following a tumultuous year, Nissan will close seven plants, reducing its production plant total from 17 to 10. Specific positions and plant closures were not immediately disclosed.

Nissan employs over 133,000 people worldwide, with about 21,000 in the U.S. The new cuts will bring total workforce reductions to 20,000 jobs, building upon last year’s announcement of cutting 9,000 workers.

Newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa is optimistic about Nissan’s future, acknowledging financial challenges and revealing upcoming vehicles like the new Leaf EV and the Kicks.

Recent challenges faced by Nissan include new management, declining sales, and potential merger or acquisition talks. Despite these obstacles, analysts foresee the company persevering.

In December 2024, Nissan and Honda considered merging, but Nissan backed out of negotiations in February. This story is still developing.
