Boeing close to DOJ deal to avoid trial or guilty plea in 737 Max crashes.

The Justice Department and Boeing are close to a deal to avoid a trial or pleading guilty in criminal cases related to deadly 737 Max crashes. Boeing previously agreed to plead guilty but the deal was rejected. The fraud charge is related to misleading regulators about the flight-control system on the Max.

A final agreement has not been reached yet, but it could involve compensation for victims’ families. The two crashes of the Boeing jet killed all 346 people on board. The new agreement would prevent Boeing from being labeled a felon, which could have restricted defense contractor work for the company.

Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter and a major defense contractor. The company recently won a multibillion-dollar contract from the Trump administration to build a next-generation fighter jet. The Justice Department and Boeing have not commented on the ongoing negotiations.
