Construction has started on Project Roadrunner in Texas, set to be the world’s largest e-fuels production plant. Located in Reeves County, it will produce 23,000 tonnes per year of sustainable aviation fuel. Investors include Brookfield Asset Management and Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. E-fuels offer a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based fuels.

Once operational, Project Roadrunner will supply e-fuels to aviation companies like American Airlines and International Airlines Group. E-fuels are synthetic fuels produced using waste CO₂ and renewable energy. Infinium was the first company in 2023 to distribute commercial volumes of e-fuels in the US and Europe from its Project Pathfinder facility in Texas.

The Roadrunner project is a significant investment in Texas, creating skilled jobs in construction, operations, and logistics. It has reached financial close and aims to scale the e-fuels market. The facility will utilize waste CO₂ and renewable energy, including 150MW of new wind generation capacity.

The facility will also feature a 100MW HYPRPlant solution for green hydrogen production. E-fuels produced at Roadrunner will be available for domestic use and export. An agreement with IAG will see eSAF shipped to the UK to meet sustainable fuel mandates. Construction is underway, with commercial operations expected by 2027.

Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle emphasized the economic growth and job creation benefits of the project. The goal is to ensure the US remains a global leader in energy security, resilience, and innovation. The project showcases a commitment to alternative low-carbon fuel options and diversifying the energy supply chain.
