Australia’s crypto industry is optimistic about pro-crypto politician Andrew Charlton being named assistant minister for the digital economy. Charlton, along with minister Tim Ayres, will focus on advancing technology, innovation, and the digital economy. Charlton has shown strong support for the industry in the past, promoting a balanced regulatory framework for growth.
CEO of Swyftx, Jason Titman, believes Charlton’s appointment is great news for crypto in Australia. He hopes Charlton will fast track legislation around digital assets, as the industry has been waiting for clarity. Vakul Talwar of Crypto.com sees the appointment as a sign of the growing importance of the digital economy in Australia, with around 31% of adults owning or having owned crypto.
Australian crypto exchange Independent Reserve reports that roughly 6.2 million Australians have owned or currently own crypto, representing around 31% of the adult population. Edward Carroll of MHC Digital Group highlights Charlton’s recognition of the importance of fostering an innovative financial ecosystem. Damian Kassabgi of Tech Council of Australia sees the government’s commitment to the digital economy as crucial for future job growth.
The reelected center-left Labor Party proposed a new crypto framework in March, aiming to regulate exchanges under existing financial laws and tackle debanking. Industry consultations have been initiated to draft a regulatory framework for crypto. Charlton’s support for digital assets and blockchain technology is seen as essential for Australia to keep pace with global regulations.
