Detroit carrier joins distributor in large-scale bankruptcy

SFD Transportation, a Detroit-based grocery-hauling company with over 300 trucks, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion and assets between $1 billion and $10 billion. The company has estimated 5,001 to 10,000 creditors.

Jointly filing for bankruptcy with SFD Transportation are 11 other subsidiaries and parent company Del Mar Holding LLC, including Harvest Sherwood Food Distributors Inc. and Hamilton Meat LLC. The debtors have moved for joint administration under Harvest Sherwood.

Top creditors in SFD Transportation’s bankruptcy filing include Burford Capital, National Beef Packing Co., and Tyson Foods. The company carries general freight, fresh produce, meat, refrigerated food, and paper products, with 308 power units and 262 drivers, according to SAFER data.

An involuntary Chapter 7 petition was filed against Sherwood Food Distributors, with an anticipated dismissal after the Chapter 11 case begins. Eric Kaup, Sherwood’s chief restructuring officer, signed off on behalf of SFD Transportation in the filing.
