Nissan’s Oppama plant, opened in 1961, faces possible closure as the company announces plans to cut 15% of its workforce and shutter seven factories globally. The plant, long a symbol of Nissan’s global ambitions, is being considered for closure, along with other facilities in Japan, South Africa, India, Argentina, and Mexico.
Closure of the Oppama plant, known as Nissan’s “mother factory”, would have a devastating impact on its 3,900 employees, their families, and the city of Yokosuka. Nissan’s decision to cut jobs reflects a shift away from Japan’s traditional lifetime-employment model.
Oppama, once the birthplace of Nissan’s Leaf, the world’s top-selling EV model until Tesla surpassed it, now produces Note and Aura models. The plant is integral to Yokosuka’s economy and history, symbolizing the city’s transition from military to civilian life post-WWII.
The closure of the Oppama plant would not only impact Nissan employees but also subcontractors and local businesses, such as a 72-year-old standing bar near the station. The plant’s potential closure raises concerns about the future of Yokosuka and its residents.
