Southern Energy SA (SESA) has made a final investment decision for the Southern Energy floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) export project in Argentina. The project will utilize two Golar LNG FLNG vessels off the coast of Río Negro province, with a total capacity of six million tonnes per annum (mtpa).
The joint venture includes Pan American Energy (30%), YPF (25%), Pampa Energía (20%), Harbour Energy (15%), and Golar LNG (10%). The FLNG vessels, Hilli Episeyo and MKII, will process gas from the Vaca Muerta formation in Neuquén, one of the world’s largest shale gas reserves.
Harbour Energy’s capital expenditure for the project until commercial operations start is estimated at $100m. The project has secured incentives under Argentina’s RIGI framework, including dollarized revenues after three years of production. This marks an important milestone in supporting Argentina’s goal to be a significant natural gas exporter.
The Hilli Episeyo (2.45mtpa) is set to begin operations in 2027, while the larger MKII FLNG unit (3.5mtpa) is expected to start in 2028. This project is crucial for Harbour Energy to unlock value from its resource position in Argentina and support the country’s ambition to become a material exporter of natural gas.
