The Filecoin Foundation and Lockheed Martin Space successfully transmitted data in space using an adapted version of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) on a satellite orbiting Earth. The IPFS enhances privacy and security by identifying data based on content rather than location, making it ideal for space data transmission.
The architecture of IPFS reduces delays and compensates for data corruption caused by radiation, providing cryptographic verification to prevent tampering. Filecoin Foundation governs the decentralized cloud storage protocol Filecoin (FIL) using IPFS, while Lockheed Martin is a major aerospace company. Interest in decentralized storage is growing among media companies and potential military applications are being explored.
The IPFS allows for retrieval of data from the closest source, whether it’s a device, satellite, or lunar station, reducing delays from distant locations such as the Moon or Mars. Multiple copies of data stored across a global network improve reliability, especially in environments prone to hardware degradation, ensuring the integrity of sensitive materials like satellite images. The FIL token has a market capitalization of approximately $1.8 billion as of May 16.
