Sales of foreign-branded mobile phones in China, including Apple Inc’s iPhones, increased slightly in April, with shipments rising to 3.52 million units from 3.50 million a year earlier, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

Apple’s performance in China’s smartphone market is crucial, especially after a 9% drop in phone sales in the first quarter. The company faces tough competition from domestic rivals, leading to price cuts and discounts of up to 2,530 yuan ($351) on the latest iPhone 16 models on Chinese e-commerce platforms.

The uptick in April sales follows a slow start to the year for Apple in China, where the company is working to maintain its position against local competitors. The data released by CAICT sheds light on the performance of foreign-branded phones in the country’s market, showing a slight improvement in sales compared to the previous year.
