Credit cards are a popular payment method at gas stations, offering perks like bonus points or cash back. However, some stations are charging more per gallon for credit card purchases than for cash, with some even hiding the extra charge.
In Florida, it is legal for businesses to impose a surcharge on credit card purchases. Some gas stations are taking advantage of this by charging $1 more per gallon for credit card payments without clearly informing customers upfront.
One consumer, Pat Igo, noticed the discrepancy and was shocked to learn that some stations can set any price for credit card purchases. Reporter Dave Bohman found several local gas stations charging $1 more for credit card payments, with two lowering it to 90 cents per gallon when questioned.
Consumer attorney Thomas Patti confirmed the legality of this practice, as long as businesses disclose the price difference to customers. The Florida Attorney General’s Office also confirmed the legality but emphasized the importance of clear disclosure to consumers.
To avoid paying extra at the pump, consumers can use apps like GasBuddy to compare gas prices and be wary of stations with credit card surcharges. Paying with a debit card may be a suitable alternative to avoid surcharges.
Efficient driving habits, such as avoiding speeding and maintaining proper tire pressure, can help reduce fuel consumption and save money on gas. By making small adjustments, drivers can stretch each fill-up and enjoy savings in the long run.
