GM pioneers new EV battery technology (LMR prismatic cells), reducing costs and boosting profits

General Motors (GM) is pioneering new EV battery technology, LMR prismatic cells, to reduce costs and boost profits for electric SUVs and trucks. The batteries use more affordable minerals like manganese, aiming for a 2028 release in vehicles like the Chevrolet Silverado and Escalade IQ. GM expects the new batteries to increase range and performance at a lower cost compared to current batteries. Ford also plans to launch similar batteries before 2030. GM’s LMR batteries are being developed in partnership with LG Energy Solution and are expected to start production in the U.S. by 2028. The new prismatic LMR batteries and supporting technologies are expected to significantly reduce the weight and number of parts in GM’s large EVs. The batteries are expected to have 33% higher energy density than LFP cells, providing more range at a comparable cost. GM’s packs with LMR prismatic batteries are estimated to cost around $80 to $90 per kilowatt-hour, compared to at least $125 per kilowatt-hour for current batteries. GM aims to offer over 400 miles of range in an electric truck while reducing battery pack costs.
