Google has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle claims of unauthorized data collection. Attorney General Ken Paxton stated this sends a message that tech companies are not above the law. The settlement resolves claims related to geolocation, incognito searches, and biometric data tracking. Google spokesperson José Castañeda said the agreement settles old claims, with no new product changes required. This is the largest settlement amount won by any state in a case of data-privacy violations against Google. Meta has also settled a $1.4 billion lawsuit with Texas over allegations of unauthorized biometric data use.
