Container bookings from China to the U.S. increased by 50% for Hapag-Lloyd after the tariff battle pause. CEO Rolf Habben Jansen noted a surge in recent days, expecting capacity to return swiftly with larger ships deployed soon, benefiting from the Gemini network with Maersk.

Profit for Hapag-Lloyd rose by 45% to $469 million in the first quarter, driven by a 15% increase in revenue to $5.3 billion. Liner shipping saw $5.2 billion in revenue, 3.3 million TEUs, and an average rate of $1,480 per TEU, with EBITDA up 18% and EBIT up 25%.

The Gemini network launch increased schedule reliability to 90% for Hapag-Lloyd, despite operational challenges rerouting ships and port disruptions. Spot freight rates declined post-Chinese New Year, affecting earnings normalization. Uncertainty in demand trends remains for 2025 due to geopolitical and economic factors, particularly in the China-U.S. trade lane.
