India's alcohol industry concerned about impact of tariff cuts on UK exports

The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) expresses concern over India’s reduction of tariffs on UK spirits in new trade deal. Whisky and gin tariffs to be halved to 75%, later falling to 40% by “year ten.” India is largest export market for Scotch whisky by volume and fifth by value in 2024.

CIABC fears impact on Indian alcohol industry if similar trade deals are made with other countries. Warns reduced tariffs could put Indian wine and spirits makers at risk. Director general calls for measures like minimum import price and removal of non-tariff barriers for fair competition.

UK-India trade deal will see no tariffs on UK soft drink exports and improved access to ingredients from India. Concerns raised about potential negative impact on Indian Alcobev industry if duty reduction template is applied to trade deals with EU, US, and other nations producing spirits and wines.

CIABC warns Indian government of potential failure to meet $1bn alcohol industry export target by 2030 without better access to UK, EU, and Australian markets. Calls for safeguards to protect local alcohol industry.
