Inquiries from wealthy Americans seeking overseas citizenship to protect assets have surged 183% in a year, per Henley & Partners. Reasons cited include asset management and geopolitical instability concerns, with around 30% of investment migration applications from U.S. citizens. High-net-worth individuals are diversifying wealth strategically to safeguard against uncertainty.
Most wealthy Americans are looking to Europe for citizenship, with countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland offering attractive residence programs. The Caribbean and Turkey are also popular due to low tax rates. Nauru in Micronesia is a surprising addition to the list due to its tax incentives and gateway citizenship program.
Nauru, the third smallest country globally, offers tax incentives and a gateway citizenship program allowing visa-free entry to 89 countries. Despite interest in overseas options, the U.S. remains a global wealth leader, with over 6 million people able to invest $1 million or more, accounting for 37% of the world’s millionaire population.
Henley & Partners report that the U.S. dominates high-growth tech sectors, attracting tech entrepreneurs to create and grow wealth. Chief Economist Jean Paul Fabri notes the USA remains the best place to create and grow wealth, even as some opt to move elsewhere for strategic reasons.
