IRS’ Crypto Leads Are Leaving the Agency After Accepting DOGE Deals

The IRS lost key crypto initiative directors, Seth Wilks and Raj Mukherjee, who accepted deferred resignation offers from the Department of Government Efficiency. They are on paid administrative leave but technically still employees for a few months. Both came from the crypto industry and were tasked with improving crypto taxation efforts at the IRS, including drafting tax rules. Congress overturned a rule on DeFi brokers earlier this year that was finalized by the IRS under the Biden administration. Wilks and Mukherjee voluntarily accepted buyouts ahead of expected IRS staff cuts. Over 20,000 IRS employees signed up for deferred resignations, with administrative leave through September.
