Japan’s finance minister clarified that the country has no plans to use its $1 trillion-plus U.S. Treasury holdings as a bargaining chip in trade talks with Washington. This statement comes after earlier remarks raised the possibility of using the bond holdings as leverage in negotiations. The minister emphasized that Japan’s primary purpose for holding U.S. Treasuries is to ensure liquidity for yen intervention if needed. There are no intentions to sell the holdings as a bargaining tool in trade discussions.
