Emirates, based in Dubai, announced $5.2 billion in annual profits, declaring itself the world’s most profitable airline post-pandemic. The carrier served 53.7M passengers and had after-tax profits of $4.7 billion. Its parent company, Emirates Group, saw $5.6 billion in profits, up from $5.1 billion. 121,000 workers received a 22-week bonus.
Emirates reported revenues of $34.9 billion, an increase from the previous year. While it lagged in revenue behind Delta Air Lines, its $5.2 billion profit placed it at the forefront. Operating with 260 aircraft to 148 locations, Emirates benefits from falling crude oil prices and a diverse fleet.
Dubai’s ruler praised Emirates as an economic tool, connecting continents and driving transformation. Dubai International Airport, the busiest for international passengers, had a record 92.3M passengers. Plans to move to a new airfield worth $35B are underway. Dubai grapples with traffic and costs despite a real-estate boom and tourism influx.
As part of the UAE, Dubai provided Emirates with a $4 billion bailout during the pandemic. The airline has repaid $3.6 billion of that loan. Emirates serves as a vital link in East-West travel and contributes significantly to Dubai’s GDP through various industries.
