Norfolk Southern improves short line connections to increase carload volume

Norfolk Southern has expanded its interchange improvement program to all of its shortline connections to increase carload volume growth. The Short Line Interchange Project has been rolled out to all 260-plus shortline partners, creating real-time data and communication channels to quickly resolve service problems. About 40% of NS’s carload volume originates or terminates on a connecting shortline railroad. The program has resulted in significant volume growth, outperforming the railroad’s general business in the same markets. Collaboration and data sharing among NS and short lines have led to faster problem resolution and improved service efficiency.
