Novo Nordisk lowers 2025 sales and profits forecasts due to weaker demand in the US for weight loss and diabetes drugs. Despite this, Q1 results show strong growth with revenues at DKr78.1bn and operating profit at DKr38.8bn, up 18% and 20% respectively from last year.
Shares in Novo Nordisk rise 5.8% following positive Q1 results, making it the second largest market cap in Europe at DKr1.56tn. The majority of revenue comes from diabetes and obesity care, with sales reaching DKr73.5bn. Obesity sales are the main driver, up 65% compared to Q1 2024.
Novo Nordisk adjusts 2025 sales growth to 13-21% and operating profit growth to 16-24% due to lower-than-planned penetration of branded GLP-1RA treatments in the US. Compounded GLP-1RAs impacted sales, leading to a reduction in the company’s outlook for the year.
The US FDA sets deadlines for pharmacies to stop production of compounded semaglutide copies, easing pressures on Novo Nordisk. Despite this, some vendors continue to offer compounded semaglutide, impacting the company’s market share in the obesity sector.
GlobalData forecasts peak sales of $26bn for Wegovy by 2031, despite temporary growth slowing due to compounding pressures. Novo Nordisk remains focused on expanding patient access to their GLP-1RA treatments and preventing unlawful compounding practices.
