Romania’s OMV Petrom signs gas supply deal with Moldova, covering a quarter of Moldova’s annual gas needs to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on Russian gas. Deliveries from the Black Sea Neptun Deep project to start in 2027, providing around 100 billion cubic meters of gas.
The agreement with Moldova taps into the Neptun Deep gas field, satisfying 25% of Moldova’s total gas demand of 3.2bcm annually. Moldova’s relations with Russia’s Gazprom have soured, making direct gas supply from Neptun Deep crucial for stability. The deal is seen as a vital step in alleviating the energy crisis in Moldova’s Transdniestria region.
Romania’s Neptun Deep project is set to double the country’s gas output, positioning it as a potential net exporter. OMV Petrom secures a five-year contract to supply Germany’s Uniper with gas from Neptun Deep. The project is Romania’s largest in nearly two decades and marks a significant milestone for the country’s energy production.
The commencement of drilling at Neptun Deep is a significant achievement for Romania, with the project expected to boost gas production by around 8bcm annually. This offshore project in the Black Sea is Romania’s largest natural gas venture and will contribute significantly to the country’s energy landscape.
