Retail Sales Rise in April, but Growth Slowed from March

Retail and food services sales in the US rose 0.1% in April to $724.1 billion, in line with estimates. Growth slowed compared to March’s 1.7% increase. Year-over-year, retail sales jumped 5.2%. Retail trade services dropped 0.1% overall but were up 4.7% YoY. Food services and drinking establishments saw a 1.2% increase in April. Some groups had declines, like department stores and gas stations. Overall retail and food services sales for the year are up 3.8%. The report shows signs of consumer weakness as the economy slowed and tariffs took effect. Stocks opened lower in response.
