U.S. retail trading has surged with the rise of app-based trading, especially during Covid. Retail investors are now buying more ETFs than ever before, consistently increasing their net buying since 2019. Despite recent market sell-offs, retail investors are still actively trading, with the value of stock trading outweighing ETF trading. However, retail trade is still a small portion of all market liquidity, accounting for less than 4% of total value traded. Retail investors also show a growing interest in ETFs, but their share of that trading remains relatively low compared to overall market activity.
