Shell reports weak Q1 earnings, plans $3.5 billion share buyback

British oil and gas company Shell Plc reported a weak profit in the first quarter, with income before taxation falling to $8.96 billion from $11.04 billion last year. Income attributable to shareholders was $4.78 billion, down from $7.36 billion, and earnings per share dropped to $0.79 from $1.13. The company announced a $3.5 billion share buyback program to reduce issued share capital. Adjusted earnings were $5.58 billion, down from $7.73 billion, and adjusted EBITDA declined to $15.25 billion from $18.71 billion. Revenues also fell to $69.23 billion from $72.48 billion.
