Solana Labs offshoot Anza pitches ‘biggest change’ ever to network consensus

Anza proposes Alpenglow, a new proof-of-stake consensus for Solana that aims to revolutionize the network and compete with internet infrastructure. Alpenglow consists of Votor and Rotor, aiming to reduce latency and enhance network responsiveness. The project expects finality in about 150 milliseconds, potentially opening up new applications for blockchain technology.

Votor, part of Alpenglow, aims to finalize blocks quickly based on stake participation. The project anticipates competing with Web2 infrastructure in terms of responsiveness, enabling real-time performance for blockchain technology. Anza researchers believe this new model will result in unprecedented finalization latency under harsh network conditions.

Alpenglow won’t completely shield Solana from network outages, as past experiences have shown. Solana currently relies on one production-ready client, Agave, making the network vulnerable to security issues. However, a new independent validator client called Firedancer is set to launch on Solana’s mainnet this year, providing client diversification for increased network stability.
