Southwest Airlines starts charging many flyers to check bags this week

Southwest Airlines will start charging passengers to check bags on March 18, ending its long-standing policy of two free checked bags. This move comes after pressure to increase revenue, as baggage fees brought in $7.3 billion for U.S. airlines last year. Southwest will also introduce basic economy tickets and assigned seating, departing from its traditional open-seating model. Passengers with certain status or credit cards will still receive exemptions from bag fees. Southwest expects an increase in carry-on luggage and is making adjustments to accommodate the changes. CEO Bob Jordan stated that the new policy has not deterred customers from booking flights.
