Stora Enso has finalized the acquisition of Junnikkala Oy, a Finnish sawmill company, for up to €137 million. The deal expands Stora Enso’s wood supply chain and sawmilling capacity, with the acquired sawmills now operating as part of the company’s site in Oulu. This move aims to enhance operational efficiency and secure a stable raw material supply for its packaging business.
The acquisition will increase Stora Enso’s annual wood procurement in Finland by approximately 1.7 million cubic metres and boost its sawmilling capacity by around 700,000 cubic metres. The deal includes Junnikkala’s new sawmill in Oulu, expected to generate €15 million in annual cost synergies once fully operational. A portion of the payment is tied to the new sawmill’s performance, ensuring efficiency gains are met before the full transaction value is realized.
Stora Enso’s acquisition of Junnikkala Oy aligns with its strategy to strengthen its presence in the wood processing and packaging sectors. With expanded production capacity and improved access to raw materials, the company aims to enhance its competitiveness in the fiber-based packaging market. The deal signifies a significant step towards achieving these goals and driving long-term growth in these key sectors.
