Swift Current Energy has completed its 800MW Double Black Diamond Solar project in Illinois, the largest east of the Mississippi River. The city of Chicago sources 70% of its power from the facility, serving major airports and entities like Cook County and CVS Health. The project generated 500 jobs and aligns with labour standards.
The solar project used domestically manufactured components, with most solar modules from First Solar in Ohio and racking systems from Nextracker with steel from Chicago. McCarthy Building Companies provided engineering services. Swift Current Energy emphasizes supporting US manufacturers and American workers, meeting growing electricity demand.
Since its 2018 inception, the project has powered 100,000 homes annually and began full operation in 2024. Swift Current Energy remains the long-term owner, with financial backing from Google and construction financing from Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and others. The project will provide tax revenue and a community benefits fund to local institutions in Illinois.
