Tesla Misses Out on European EV Market Growth as Sales Halved Last Month

Tesla’s sales in the EU dropped for the fourth consecutive month, with new-car registrations falling by nearly 53% to 5,475 vehicles last month. Despite a growing EV market in the EU, Tesla faces stiff competition from Chinese rivals. Elon Musk said he would focus more on the company’s operations after facing backlash.

The EV market in the EU has been growing, with sales of battery-electric vehicles increasing by more than 26% between January and April. Hybrid-electric cars saw a nearly 21% growth, while plug-in-hybrid models logged a 7.8% increase. Tesla continues to struggle against Chinese competitors expanding aggressively in Europe.

Tesla stock rose 4% after President Trump delayed new tariffs on the EU. Chinese automaker BYD outsold Tesla in Europe in April, followed by SAIC Motor. Competitive prices have helped Chinese carmakers gain market share, leading European carmakers to revise their sales and profitability forecasts.
