Supercomputer Doudna at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory set to launch in 2026

Doudna, a groundbreaking supercomputer being built at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is set to launch in 2026. Named after CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, it promises real-time discovery for U.S. researchers. Powered by Dell infrastructure and NVIDIA Vera Rubin architecture, it aims to accelerate breakthroughs in fusion energy, materials science, drug discovery, and astronomy.

Unlike traditional systems, Doudna merges simulation, data, and AI into a seamless platform, empowering over 11,000 researchers with integrated workflows. It is expected to outperform its predecessor, Perlmutter, by more than 10x in scientific output while using 2-3x the power, resulting in a 3-5x increase in performance per watt.

Doudna will drive AI-driven breakthroughs in protein design, fundamental physics, and materials science, enabling researchers like David Baker and Benjamin Nachman to make significant advancements using AI models. It will have real-world impact by supporting DOE’s ESnet to stream data from telescopes, detectors, and genome sequencers directly into the machine for fast and uninterrupted processing.

The supercomputer Doudna is not just for one field but for discovery across various scientific disciplines.
