U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Edge Down To 227,000

In a surprising turn, first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits slightly decreased to 227,000 in the week ending May 17th, down 2,000 from the previous week. Economists had anticipated a slight increase to 230,000. The four-week moving average increased to 231,500, up 1,000 from the previous average of 230,500. Continuing claims also rose by 36,000 to 1.903 million, with the four-week moving average hitting its highest point since November 2021 at 1,887,500. This suggests that finding new employment is proving challenging for workers who have lost their jobs.
