Glencore Australia’s Ulan coal mine in NSW, Australia, has been approved for underground expansion, allowing an additional 18.8mt of coal extraction until 2035. The mine, one of Australia’s largest, has permission to extract nearly 330mt of ore over the next two decades, providing continued employment opportunities.
Despite concerns raised by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water about potential environmental impacts, the NSW Department of Planning concluded that the expansion’s effects on native species and vegetation can be managed. The project’s GHG emissions are expected to make up less than 0.1% of the state’s targets for 2030 and 2035.
As part of the approval conditions, Glencore Australia must prepare a Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Plan within six months. In other news, Mt. Labo Exploration and Development has formed a strategic partnership with Glencore International for the Mabilo copper and gold project in the Philippines, including offtake agreements and a financing package.
