US considers more Chinese companies for ‘entity list,’ source says

The U.S. Commerce Department is considering adding more Chinese companies, like ChangXin Memory (CXMT), to the restricted export list. This may include subsidiaries of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation and Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. Companies on the list cannot receive exports without a license, often denied due to national security concerns.

The timing of this potential move is complicated by a recent trade deal between the U.S. and China. The Biden administration added over two dozen Chinese entities to the list in January, including Zhipu AI and Sophgo. Controls on chip exports to China were also strengthened to prevent diversion to Huawei, a concern for national security.
